Grandpa Pencil's Recipe

Garlic and Herb Bread


Garlic and Herb Bread


  • 2 French Sticks
  • 225g Butter
  • 1 or more juicy Cloves of Garlic to taste
  • 1 level teaspoon each of finely chopped parsley, chives and Lemon Thyme
  • Salt and Pepper to taste


 You will need
A sharp knife, a cutting board, 2 mixing bowls, a wooden spoon oven mitts and aluminium foil


  • Cut the French sticks into chunky slices almost to the bottom of the loaf but not quite
  • Beat the butter until soft and creamy and divide into two equal portions
  • Crush the garlic and mix well into one portion of butter
  • Add salt and pepper to taste
  • Mix the chives, lemon thyme and parsley well into the other portion adding salt and pepper
  • Spread the garlic butter thickly into the cuts of one loaf and the herb butter into the other using up all of the butter
  • Wrap each bread stick tightly in foil and bake in a moderate oven (200c) for around 15 minutes
  • Unwrap, place on a platter and serve hot
  • As the butter moistens the bread it could be a day or two old
